Hi friends! Welcome back to my Home Office Makeover Series!! We left of here, where I showed you my freshly painted table, Ikea shelf brackets, how I mounted my paddle, and my DIY memo board from a garbage pick. I’m getting so excited putting the finishing touches on the office, and getting a little nervous about the difficult part: organization and file crate DIY!
Now I’m getting ready to tackle our filing problem!

Organizing files is the worst. I never know where to start, and kinda freeze when trying to brainstorm tab names and what things should be file where and blah blah blah. But I thought…
…maybe I’ll be better at organizing our files if I have a pretty system at which to stare for hours at a time…
So I made it my mission this week to figure out a pretty way to file.
I first considered using a file cabinet system and painting the cabinets like I saw here:
But I don’t really have a separate place for files, since the Ikea Shelving unit takes up the longest wall in the room.
So I kinda just decided I would use something that would fit on the shelves, but also be decorative.
I originally had the idea to use some baskets I already had, similar to this:
But when I went to Home Goods to try to find a few more matching baskets, I came up short. That’s the difficult part of shopping at Home Goods, you can rarely find more than two matching baskets.
After spending entirely too much time at Home Goods looking down entirely too many isles for entirely no reason at all, I made a trip to JoAnn Fabrics.
As funny as it is, one of my very first ideas was possibly to use these crates, which I’m sure you’ve seen in Pinterest Land by now:
But for some reason I thought my file folders wouldn’t fit in the crates.
Well, while I was at JoAnn’s, I found the crates and tested the fit any way. And to my surprise, it actually fit! Not only that, but these crates were on sale for $9.99, and I had a 20% off coupon. So all my math friends, what’s the final cost per crate?
sold. I bought 8 crates. naturally.
I almost bought more, but I had my Mini Cooper and wasn’t sure if more than 8 would fit.
Apparently they are supposed to fit file folders, which I found out after I finished the project. Here I am thinking I’m some kind of DIY genius & that I’ll use these crates for something so unexpected it’ll knock everyone’s socks off.
But turns out, they were made for that.
Sadly enough, my files didn’t quite fit.
The little metal hooks on my file folders were just a hair too short to sit nicely on the edge. So I whipped out my little wood scraper thingy’ma’bob
and went to town shaving down the edges on both sides.
With that little bit shaved from each side, they fit!
Now onward to staining!
But the most amazing surprise came about when I was down to my last drops of the Weathered Oak stain! I must not have mixed it up well enough, because there was a large amount of blue color pigment left at the bottom of the can.
I think I quite literally shrieked with joy!
So I went back and added the blue stain pigment to all of my crates. I loooooveee how they turned out! They look even more beachy/driftwood/recovered from a sunken pirate ship. Don’t you agree?
I’m so excited to add all my files!!! But I’m considering decorating the file folders before hand, so they’re not military green, not that I mind them so much in these crates. But maybe I’ll add a pattern on the outside, color on the inside or the other way around.
I got these fun little tags for 99 cents at Ikea. I’m going to add the file category on the back.
Here’s a glimpse of the shelves. Sorry for the photo quality today, I used my iphone because I couldn’t find my SD card for my camera!
The shelves are kinda thrown together right now, I’m playing around with different organizational ideas. What do you think of the new file crates?
